WHAT IS SOFT TISSUE THERAPY AND REMEDIAL MASSAGE?

Soft tissue therapy is a manipulation of all the soft tissues of the body including muscle, skin, connective tissues, ligaments and tendons involving assessment, treatment and management. Remedial massage is one of the most effective ways to prevent and treat muscular injuries and soreness. It is important to look at the body as a whole and not just treat the obvious symptoms in a given area as this can lead to a return of the original issue and misunderstanding of the underlying cause of a problem. At Evergreen Clinic we look at the body as a whole and aim to deal with the causes and symptoms and offer after care that can relieve problems long term.

Step by Step Guide to Choosing the Right Massage

Getting the right therapist.

Choosing the right therapist is key to getting a massage that will offer the benefits you need and allow you to relax and get the most out of the treatment. Each massage therapist will have a particular way of working and it is important that you feel comfortable with what they are doing at all times.

Qualifications are important and you should always check that your therapist is a level 5 BTEC or above if you have any injuries or conditions and wish to have these treated. Beware therapists who have been on fast track or short courses only. It is also worth checking where the qualification was gained and what registered body they are with as massage can cause and worsen symptoms if it is not carried out by a fully qualified and registered therapist.

Registered bodies that are recognised in the UK include the ISRM whom Evergreen Clinic is registered with, see link below for more information.

Choosing the right treatment.

There are many techniques that a massage therapist can use and the assessment at the beginning of treatment will allow the therapist to judge what will suit your needs and discuss the options available. Such techniques include Muscle Energy Technique, Neuromuscular Technique, Positional Release and Myofascial Release. At any time if you feel the treatment is uncomfortable or you would prefer to try a different technique the therapist will aim to adapt to your needs. Many still hold a belief that sports massage is meant to hurt and for some this comes as an expectation from the treatment. However, it is important to understand that although some techniques can cause discomfort the level of pain should be controlled and constantly monitored by the therapist. If you would rather avoid treatments that may cause discomfort there are many alternatives that cause no pain and can still get good results .It is important to be aware that medical background will effect the treatment.
